"...If I may offer my 2 cents on this. "I swear" is a common expression in the part of Texas I come from. It is usually followed by an ellipsis... It's an acknowledgement that the speaker has no words to express his feelings... it's a shorthand for everything and nothing... It is interchangeable with phrases like, "You don't say?!" or "Well, I never..." a way of keeping the conversation going without actually adding anything to it.
I don't mean to give the impression that anyone on this thread is off the mark in their interpretation, as I said... everything and nothing...
Personally I don't think Ennis could find any words to follow these. It's just not in him. Those feelings will always and ever remain inside him.
